History of Tea

One of the most popular drinks in the world, tea has a long and varied history that dates back many centuries. Tea's history begins in ancient China. According to mythology, Emperor Shen Nong discovered tea in 2737 BCE when tea leaves blew into a kettle of boiling water. After being used for therapeutic purposes at first, tea quickly gained popularity in Chinese culture and became a prestige and refinement symbol among the upper class. Gradually, the customs of growing and drinking tea extended to nearby areas like Korea and Japan, where distinct tea customs thrived. European traders and explorers brought tea to the West in the 16th and 17th centuries, when it was rapidly adopted by the nobility and finally became an everyday drink. With their colonization activities in India and other regions of Asia, the British in particular contributed significantly to the spread of tea throughout the world by establishing extensive plantations. Even now, tea is still highly valued and appreciated all over the world. It can be had at formal events or informal get-togethers, and it is still fundamental to many social norms and cultural practices.
